India’s much-sought commercial filmmaker Priyadarshan’s off-beat Tamil film Kanchivaram has won the best feature film award at the 55th National Film Awards 2007, while Tamil actor Prakashraj has been adjudged best actor for his performance in the same film.
The announcement came on Monday in New Delhi. Renowned Malayalam film director Adoor Gopalakrishnan is best director for Naalu Pennungal, while Kannada actress Uma Shri is best actress for Gulabi Talkies.
Talking about Prakashraj’s win over Shahrukh Khan and Aamir, Priyadarshan said, “It was expected. I was very sure Prakashraj would get it. I am happy about my film Kanchivaram getting the award, I am a commercial filmmaker and my off-beat film getting accolades comes as a surprise.”
Meanwhile, Bollywood star Aamir Khan’s directorial debut Taare Zameen Par got the best family welfare award. Gandhi My Father received three awards; special jury awards for Best Film, Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor.
Bhavna Talwar’s directorial debut Dharm won best film on national integration award. Playback singer Shankar Mahadevan won the award for the song ‘Meri Maa’ from the film Taare Zameen Par. Lyricist Prasoon Joshi also won in Best Lyrics category for Taare Zameen Par.
The jury was headed by Sai Paranjpe; other members included Ashok Viswanathan and Namita Gokhale. About 102 feature films and 106 non-feature films were considered for the prestigious National Awards.
