2010 International Women’s Day, 8 March 2010 International Women’s Day

Women's Day Wishes

International Women’s Day (IWD) is marked on March 8th every year.

It is a major day of global celebration for the economic, political and social achievements of women. Started as a Socialist political event, the holiday blended in the culture of many countries (primarily Russia and the countries of former Soviet bloc).

In some celebrations, the day lost its political flavour, and became simply an occasion for men to express their love to the women around them in a way somewhat similar to Mother’s Day and St Valentine’s Day mixed together. In others, however, the political and human rights theme as designated by the United Nations runs strong, and political and social awareness of the struggles of women worldwide are brought out and examined in a hopeful manner. 2010 International Women’s Day, 8 March 2010 International Women’s Day, Celebrate Women’s Day 8 March 2010, International Women s Day, International Women’s Day, IWD, IWD 2010, Woman s Day, Women s Day, Womens Day

Different group of people have different mahashivratri story but all point towards one common thing that maha shivaratri is the occasion to please the lord and seek his blessings to get all our wishes fulfilled:

· Maha shivratri Story One: Samudra Manthan
It is believed that during the churning of ocean by gods and demons a highly toxic pot of poison which could have destroyed the world. To save the masses lord Shiva consumed this poison and kept it in his throat by tying it with a serpent. The poison turned his throat blue and this is the main reason why Lord Shiva is popularly known as “Neelkantha”. One of the sages asked the disciples to keep Lord shiva awake whole night so that he is not impacted by the poison. Keep the same rituals in mind disciples of lord shiva still sing songs and keep vigil whole night to please the god who then showers his blessings

Sati , daughter of King Daksha was in love with Lord Shiva and considered him as her husband. King Daksha in order to discourage her daughter from marrying to such an ugly looking man surrounded by serpents and devils organized a religious ceremony and insulted Lord Shiva publicly. In anger Sati ended her life by jumping in fire knowing which Shiva started Tandav dance to destroy the world. In order to appease Shiva, sati was revived in the form of Parvati and the union of Shiva and Parvati marked Maha shivaratri celebrations

· Mahashivratri Story Two: Lubhdak Story
Once lived a tribal lubhdak a great Shiva devotee. One day he went to forrest to collect wood but lost his way. During night due to the fear of wild animals he climbed a bael tree and started chanting “om namah shivaya” and started dropping down bael leaves not realizing that there is a shivlingm located beneath the tree. Lord shiva pleased with his devotion saved his life and since then Maha shivaratri is celebrated by presenting Shiva with bael leaves besides other things

On this day devotees have to get up early in the morning, take bath and wear preferably new clothes. Then they need to go to a shiva temple and offer these 6 items to Lord Shiva as mentioned in Shiva Purana:

Telugu New Year Ugadhi (Gudipadava)

Ugadhi Pachadi

Ugadi marks the beginning of the Telugu New Year. It also brings happiness with the onset of Vasanth Ruthu (spring). Ugadi name has been changed from Yuga Aadi (Yuga + Aadi means beginning of New age). It is believed that the creator of the Hindu pantheon Lord Brahma started creation on this day – Chaithra Shuddha Prathipade or the Ugadi day. It is the most important festival for Hindus, which falls on Chaitra Shuddha Prathipade (Padya). According to Hindu myths, Lord Brahma created the earth and set days, nights, dates, weeks, fortnights, months, seasons, and years to count the time.

During Ramayana period, the New Year was being celebrated on the first day of Uttharayana. So, Chaitra was the 12th month. Varahamihira, a saint who lived in sixth century, started a new method of celebrating New Year on Chaitra Shuddha Prathipade. Ugadi marks the beginning of a new Hindu lunar calendar with a change in the moon’s orbit. It is a day when mantras are chanted and predictions made for the new year.

This year Ugadhi is on March 27th 2009. Preparations for the festival begin a week ahead. Houses are given a thorough wash. Shopping for new clothes and buying other items that go with the requirements of the festival are done with a lot of excitement.

Ugadi is celebrated with festive fervor in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. While it is called Ugadi in A.P. and Karnataka, in Maharashtra it is known as “Gudipadava”. On Ugadi day, people wake up before the break of dawn and take a head bath after which they decorate the entrance of their houses with fresh mango leaves. The significance of tying mango leaves relates to a legend. It is said that Kartik (or Subramanya or Kumara Swamy) and Ganesha, the two sons of Lord Siva and Parvathi were very fond of mangoes. As the legend goes Kartik exhorted people to tie green mango leaves to the doorway signifying a good crop and general well-being.

Ugadhi Pachadi is the Famous in Andra Pradesh in Telugu New Year. It is a mixer of all types of tastes like sweet , sour, bitter ….

Kavi Sammelanam (poetry recitation) is a typical Telugu Ugadi feature. Ugadi is also a time when people look forward to a literary feast in the form of Kavi Sammelanam. Many poets come up with new poems written on subjects ranging – from Ugadi – to politics to modern trends and lifestyles.
